If you are planning a visit to the French Riviera for any length of time, you will need somewhere to stay. Usually, the majority of travelers flock to any of the bigger cities in the region, namely Nice or Cannes. However, those looking for a quieter base tend to toss up between the artistic Antibes, Menton, or Villefranche-sur-Mer.
Where you decide to stay on the Côte d’Azur should depend on your preferences. However, each of these locations has some pros and cons that might influence your decision.
Overall, staying in Villefranche-sur-Mer means an easier commute to the heart of the region, Nice and offers a lively waterfront with some excellent cafes and restaurants that we absolutely love.
However, because it is a popular hub for cruise ships, it can get a bit busy when those vessels have shore days. Additionally, the town is quite hilly, which means living in Villefranche-sur-Mer can mean tackling steep daily walks to reach your rental—unless you book accommodation close to the waterfront. This is something to consider if you prefer easier access during your stay.
Staying in Villefranche-sur-Mer

Make sure you check out the Absinthe Bar and Pam Pam, which offer a great range of cocktails and fabulous atmospheres.
Those into art will also love Antibes because of its connection to Picasso. You’ll want to devote a whole day to the Picasso Museum. However, if you do decide to stay here, be aware that it is very busy during the high season, so accommodation bookings are essential.
Menton or Villefranche-sur-Mer?
For those wanting somewhere quieter with a more laid-back feel, we highly recommend Menton. What we like most about this place is its beautiful gardens, especially the Jardin Botanique Val Rahmeh, as well as Plage des Sablettes and the stunning town aesthetics that make every corner a delight to explore.
As beautiful as Menton is, however, it is less centrally positioned on the Riviera. So, being located further east than the other two might put some tourists off.
That said, the various waterfront cafes and dining options make perfect places for people-watching, and you should be able to pick up some great souvenirs from the quaint boutique shops here. There is also a great choice of accommodations to suit any budget.
Unmissable Things to Do in Villefranche-sur-Mer
There are plenty of things to do in Villefranche-sur-Mer, so it’s best to get an early start, especially if you’re visiting on a day trip. Before diving in, here’s a helpful travel tip: we recommend arriving by train rather than by car.
The entire French Riviera is well-connected by TER regional trains, which stop at nearly all the iconic coastal destinations. Trains are fast, affordable, and tickets can be booked up to 30 minutes before departure.
While exploring the Riviera by car is certainly a good option, parking in Villefranche-sur-Mer during high season can be a challenge. On the other hand, the railway station is just a 7-minute walk from the historic center, making the train a hassle-free and convenient choice.

The best place to start is the Old Town, where you’ll instantly be seduced by the charm of its narrow, cobblestone streets.
