If you’re searching for things to do in Èze, France, expect more than just postcard-worthy scenery. This hilltop village invites you to slow down, wander through fragrant gardens, step into centuries-old buildings, and soak in the magic of the Riviera from above.
When preparing to explore Èze, it is important to understand that the name refers to an entire commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department of southeastern France. What we love most about it is its idyllic setting, which stretches from Èze-sur-Mer, a coastal area on the Mediterranean Sea, all the way up to a verdant hilltop, where the medieval Èze Village lies.
This is also where many first-time visitors to the region get confused, often mixing up Èze Village with Èze-sur-Mer, the seaside stretch below. This guide is all about escaping to the hilltop village, where time slows, and every turn invites you to uncover a piece of history. Ready to explore?
The medieval village makes for a fabulous day trip from anywhere in the French Riviera, though we recommend staying at least one night if you have the chance. Despite being a relatively small community, Èze’s panoramic views, narrow alleys, and ancient façades will immediately capture your heart.

Èze, France Aesthetics: Medieval Streets, Breathtaking Views & Timeless Appeal
There is no doubt in our minds that Èze Village is one of the most enchanting villages on the French Riviera. Perched high above the sparkling Mediterranean, its unique clifftop setting provides one of the most spectacular views in the South of France.
You’ll notice straight away when you visit the village that its medieval charm is woven into every corner. It’s evident from the winding stone-paved streets, the golden-hued buildings that cling to the dramatic cliffs, and the labyrinth of passageways, where vibrant bougainvillaea spills from balconies, and the scent of jasmine fills the air.
The fortified village’s layout, designed originally for protection, now creates a storybook atmosphere where narrow alleys lead to hidden courtyards, and viewpoints break you out into goosebumps. It is a place where history and character intertwine at every turn, with ancient stone walls and artisan boutiques nestled alongside cosy cafés and beguiling bars.

Why the Èze Botanical Garden Is a Must-Visit
Dominating the highest point of Èze is the magnificent Jardin Exotique d’Èze. This stunning botanical garden offers some of the most breathtaking views on the French Riviera, including uninterrupted panoramic vistas from its hilltop terrace that stretches from Saint-Tropez to Italy.
Èze botanical garden is home to a remarkable collection of rare succulents, cacti, and Mediterranean flora, which are beautifully arranged among artistic sculptures that add to its dreamlike ambience.
The garden is open year-round from 9 am to 4.30 pm between November and March, until up to 7.30 pm at other times of the year. Entry cost is currently 7€, and we recommend visiting as soon as it opens to avoid the crowds or towards the late afternoon to see the sunset.
Alternatively, you can book a ticket on the official website of the Èze Botanical Garden. Before the entrance, you’ll find two lines—the longer one is for those purchasing tickets on-site, and it can get quite long. The second, much faster-moving line is for visitors who bought their tickets online.
Also, perhaps it was just a coincidence, but we had very poor internet signal on the narrow street leading to the garden entrance and couldn’t book tickets online at the last minute. Had we done it in advance, we could have saved a solid 30 minutes—and that was in October, far from the peak of the summer high season.
We also suggest you wear comfortable shoes because the climb up to the top can be pretty steep, and bring a hat, sunglasses (in the summer) and water.

Èze Itinerary: Things to Do Beyond the Botanical Garden
If you are only visiting Èze for a day or on your first full day there, you’ll need a good Itinerary to follow.
We suggest starting your day in Èze early in the morning to experience all the quiet charm before the crowds descend upon the village.
This is a good time to wander through the medieval streets and admire the golden-stone buildings and hidden courtyards, and when they open, explore the artisan shops that sell perfumes, ceramics, and handmade jewellery.
At the foothill of the village, you’ll find the Fragonard perfume factory, a historic perfumery where exquisite fragrances have been crafted for decades. If you’re a connoisseur of fine scents, this is the perfect place to pick up a souvenir—whether it’s an elegant bottle of perfume, artisanal soap, or other beautifully packaged skincare products made with traditional French expertise. Guided tours run throughout the day, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the art of French fragrance-making, from distillation to blending.
As you walk up the hill, stop by Église Notre-Dame de l’Assomption, a striking 18th-century church with an ochre-hued façade and beautiful Baroque interiors. Nearby, keep an eye out for Chapelle de la Sainte-Croix, the oldest religious building in Èze, dating back to the 14th century.
Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head to one of Èze’s hilltop restaurants for a scenic lunch.
Afterward, make your way to the Jardin Exotique d’Èze (Èze Botanical Garden), perched at the highest point of the village. Set aside at least an hour to explore its exotic plants, winding pathways, and breathtaking panoramic views.
To cool down after an exciting stroll through the gardens, indulge in a bit of shopping (or window shopping) at local art boutiques, where you’ll find handcrafted pottery, paintings, and unique souvenirs.
From here, you have two great options: continue to wander the village at a relaxed pace, enjoying local delicacies, or, if you’re feeling adventurous, take the Nietzsche Path (Chemin de Nietzsche) down to Èze-sur-Mer for a sunset dip in the sea—a refreshing reward after the steep descent.

The Nietzsche Trail: A Scenic Hike from Èze to the Sea
The Nietzsche Trail is a breathtaking and ‘must-do’ Èze hike that connects the medieval hilltop village to the coastal area of Èze-sur-Mer.
The trail is named after the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, who walked this path while writing Thus Spoke Zarathustra. It is a steep course that takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour to complete downhill and about 1.5 to 2 hours uphill. So, it is best suited for those with a decent fitness level.
The rocky path can be challenging, but the views are definitely worth the climb. Just remember you are not in a race, so spend some time taking them in.
It is also a good idea to hike early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat because shade on the trail is limited. Wear sturdy footwear and bring water, sunscreen, and a hat, especially in summer.
Does Èze Have a Beach? Here’s What to Know
Èze Village sits high on a cliff, so it doesn’t have a beach per se. However, the nearby Plage d’Èze in Èze-sur-Mer possesses an idyllic pebble beach that you can relax on by the Mediterranean.
The crystal-clear waters of this tranquil spot make it ideal for swimming and sunbathing, although we find the pebbles can be a bit uncomfortable after a while, so it’s not the best for sunbathing on a towel.
This Èze beach is easily accessible via the Nietzsche Trail or by train, bus, or car and has a few beachfront cafes, shops, and public amenities.

For a half-day visit, drive up to Èze, park your car, and explore the village on foot. Wander through the medieval alleys, take in the panoramic views, visit the botanical garden, and enjoy lunch at one of the hilltop restaurants before moving on to your next destination. Another option is to explore Èze as part of a guided tour, which takes care of transportation and showcases other Riviera highlights, making it a stress-free way to experience the region. While we don’t recommend using Èze as a base for traveling through the French Riviera—it’s a small village with limited transport connections—spending a night here can be a truly special experience. Once the day-trippers leave, Èze transforms into a quiet, magical retreat, where you can enjoy its charm under the soft glow of lantern-lit streets.
