In these challenging times, recommending not only a weekend in Lviv but a visit to any Ukrainian city might seem like a questionable initiative. Yet, every day, people from everywhere flock to our country to volunteer and help, support and encourage. All of these are actions for which my fellow Ukrainians and I are immensely grateful. Lviv is often one of the first ports of entry.
Despite the ongoing conflict, Ukraine remains a land of breathtaking beauty and rich culture. Lviv, with its historic charm and resilient spirit, stands as a testament to this enduring beauty. Is Lviv Worth Visiting?
Located in the western part of Ukraine, Lviv is a whirlwind of cultures and it is always an essential item on the travel itinerary for Ukraine. Here, everything authentic and proudly Ukrainian meets the remnants of Polish and Austro-Hungarian influences. Out of this mix come cozy cobbled streets, old majestic cathedrals of all confessions, wooden stairs in buildings from the times of the empire, monumental architecture from the 50s, and vibrant modern life.
Lviv is never boring.
We travel to Lviv often, as it is a relatively short five-hour drive from Kyiv. And every time, there’s something new in this city. Where once there was a dead-end at the end of an old street, there is now a hip and trendy coffee house. And where we thought we knew every brick in the wall of a building by heart, we spot a small centuries-old statue that we never noticed before.
A weekend in Lviv is a definite must on the Ukrainian travel itinerary, and we recommend staying at least two nights to get to know its Old Town. But if you have time, do stay longer. Even if you manage to cover all the city attractions within 48 hours, there are so many exciting day trips to take from Lviv. Off the top of our heads, there is the small and surprising Uzhgorod, a hidden gem of Zakarpattya. There are national parks and mountain lakes. And don’t even get us started on all the beautiful castles near Lviv!
Is Lviv Safe to Visit?
Amidst the full-scale invasion, I would avoid using the word “safe.” Lviv has experienced its share of shelling since February 2022, and no one can guarantee that no more damage will occur or that there is no threat to its residents and visitors while the invasion continues.
Lviv currently remains one of the areas most remote from the eastern frontlines. Still, air-raid sirens regularly pierce the city. We encourage every visitor to install an app that shows a map with alerts across the country and sends a signal if people in certain regions should move to a shelter. Directions to shelters are displayed throughout the historic town and residential areas.
Two-plus years of living through the full-scale invasion have taught Ukrainians to react to the alerts in a somewhat philosophical way. Many have learned to go about their business as usual. However, if you ask any of the locals to show you to the nearest shelter, you can expect help.

If you are coming from Poland, a direct train runs from Przemyśl to Lviv.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Lviv?
We always strongly recommend visiting either in late spring or early fall. May is probably the best choice when Lviv bursts into bloom with colorful flowers, creating a picturesque backdrop for sightseeing and outdoor activities. The city’s parks and gardens are vibrant, and the outdoor cafes come alive, offering a delightful atmosphere to enjoy a coffee or a meal.
September and October bring cooler temperatures and the stunning fall foliage, particularly beautiful against Lviv’s historic architecture. Summer is always an option, of course, but be prepared to roll with the summer heat and waves of tourists.
Lviv is indeed charming in winter, offering a unique atmosphere that adds a magical touch to the cityscape. The winter months, especially December, bring a festive spirit with Christmas fairs scattered throughout the Old Town. These fairs feature traditional Ukrainian crafts, food stalls offering warming treats like mulled wine and roasted chestnuts, and lively performances that enhance the holiday ambiance.
What Are the Best Places to Stay in Lviv?
The most popular area that also offers the most choices in terms of budget and capacity is the Old Town, locally known as Ploshcha Rynok. This area is the historic center filled with cafes, museums, stores, and local craft markets. Whatever you desire, day or night, Ploshcha Rynok will have it. However, if you seek peace and quiet, be aware that the main square is very crowded in the evenings, with parties continuing late into the night.
Located just a stone throw away from Ploshcha Rynok is the Grand Hotel Lviv — an excellent luxury option for a weekend in Lviv. This five-star hotel offers elegant rooms, a top-notch spa, a fitness center, and an exquisite restaurant. Its central location provides easy access to Lviv’s main attractions, making it a perfect choice for travelers seeking comfort and convenience. At the same time, it is at a relatively safe distance from the noise of the Old Town.
Alternatively, if you are looking for a combination of comfort and affordability, check out the George Hotel. This historic hotel combines classic charm with modern amenities and is just a short walk from Ploshcha Rynok. A good idea for those who wish to live close to the center without being affected by its active nightlife is to choose areas adjacent to the Old Town. The historic center is walkable, and you will hardly need to use transportation (although taking a ride on the local red tram is recommended for the experience). The only attraction requiring a taxi or bus ride is the Lychakiv Cemetery.
The Citadel Inn Hotel & Resort is an excellent luxury option adjacent to the old town of Lviv but situated in a quiet area. This five-star hotel offers a unique blend of historic ambiance and modern comfort, housed in a former fortress. Known among the locals as the City of Lions, Lviv has a lot to offer. So our first suggestion, when it comes to the travel itinerary, is to start early to make the most of your Lviv city break. Before you venture off to check out any of the old churches, museums, or cozy streets, we suggest that you start by getting acquainted with Lviv through its residents.
Lviv residents love their city. They always dress nicely when going for coffee, to the theaters, or to church on Sundays. A bit of vanity, one might assume (in fact, folks in Lviv tease one another about showing off and putting their best clothes on, especially when going to church) but this attention to wearing nice clothes is a powerful tradition that shapes both people and their worldview. They believe that every day spent living in Lviv is special, especially during these times of war, and they dress accordingly.
Many wear vyshyvankas — traditional Ukrainian clothing — not only on holidays but every day, to work or while shopping. Who knows, maybe by the end of your visit, you’ll get a vyshyvanka of your own? Ukrainians appreciate visitors wearing our national clothes as a sign of respect for our culture.

Translated as Market Square, Ploshcha Rynok is always bustling with people. But these are the realities of all popular tourist spots. But you’ll quickly learn to blend into this flow and calmly follow your own route.

Climbing the tower of the city hall for the best panorama of Lviv is something that we recommend doing early in the morning. Located right in the center of Ploshcha Rynok, the tower of the city hall is a very popular destination. So in order to have some peace and quiet at the top, one on one with the city, go early. Also, it is much easier climbing those 300+ steps up in the morning, when it’s not too hot.
Savor Lviv’s Essence: Coffee at Centaurus
In Lviv, time stops for coffee. Locals indulge in it several times a day, employing methods like zalyvana kava (poured-over coffee): simply pour boiling water into a cup with ground coffee, cover it with a saucer for 5 minutes.Centaurus offers a cozy ambiance with a beautifully stylized interior and a summer terrace right on Ploshcha Rynok. There’s nothing like enjoying a hot drink while observing the unhurried morning life. Plus, they serve excellent breakfasts. Also, if you feel like diving deeper into the Lviv coffee culture, there are themed coffee and chocolate tours to enjoy.
Step Back in Time: Discover the Old Pharmacy Museum
Not far from Centaurus, there is an old pharmacy museum dating back to 1735. Inside, you’ll find numerous rooms with old wooden counters adorned with mysterious vials and potions. Pharmacy owners of the past spared no expense on their interiors, as you will discover when you see, among other elements of decor frescoes by Vienna painters, exquisite furniture, and spacious basements. Stepping into this museum often evokes a feeling reminiscent of being characters in a Harry Potter novel, unraveling a mysterious story.
Find the Stairway to the Sky: Dzyga Café and Cultural Center
Hidden in the dead-end of Armenian Street, you’ll discover the legendary Dzyga – a literary and jazz café, and Lviv’s cultural hub supporting jazz festivals and exhibitions. Perched on the roof of the building is a unique monument: a ladder that reaches straight into the sky. Created by Lviv artists, it serves as a reminder that the sky’s the limit.
Admire the ladder during the daytime, and return to Dzyga in the evening. It’s a cozy and bustling place cherished by locals. If you’re lucky, you might catch talented jazz musicians performing here.

Lviv is home to hundreds of churches and cathedrals, and probably the best way to see most of them in one day is to take a walking tour of the historic center.
But if you only have time for one cathedral, the Dominican Cathedral of the 1750s stands out for its stunning beauty. This majestic shrine of stone features green domes and shares visual similarities with the legendary cathedrals of St. Peter in Rome and Vienna. The interior is as splendid as the exterior, boasting a towering golden altar and richly decorated naves. Today, the cathedral serves as a museum, offering visitors the chance to enjoy organ concerts, making it a must-visit in Lviv.
Uncover Hidden Gems at the Local Flea Market
Right behind the Dominican Cathedral, there is a small flea market where locals mostly sell old books. However, if you’re lucky, you might unearth some charming old cutlery or vintage vinyl records. It’s a delightful spot for browsing unique finds and experiencing Lviv’s local culture.
Indulge in Ukraine’s Culinary Delights During a Weekend in Lviv
We Ukrainians love our food, especially freshly cooked borsch (beetroot soup with sour cabbage and potatoes) accompanied by pampushkas (bread in garlic sauce) at any time of day. Sample local cuisine at one of the fantastic eateries, such as the light, stylish, and airy Baczewski restaurant, the medieval-themed 5th Dungeon, or The Most Expensive Galician Restaurant (where the food is surprisingly affordable if you know the trick to getting a discount).
If we were to give you one piece of advice for exploring Lviv’s food scene, it would be this: don’t visit the same place twice, even if you had an amazing experience! The City of Lions boasts too many great cafes and restaurants to miss out on new culinary adventures.

The House of Legends (Dim Legend) was once one of the city’s most talked-about cafes, renowned for its mysterious concept, a quirky storyteller welcoming visitors, and menus adorned with secret maps and legends. However, as typical in Lviv, staying in the spotlight is a challenge—new and more exciting spots open far too frequently.
While we wouldn’t recommend the House of Legends for dining, we do suggest climbing to its rooftop on the seventh floor. Apart from enjoying a lovely city panorama, you’ll marvel at how the owners managed to park a real car on such a tiny rooftop! Locals also enjoy the challenge of tossing pennies to hit the hat of the chimney sweeper statue—a tricky yet amusing pastime.
Explore the Armenian Cathedral
While the Dominican Cathedral impresses with its size, the Armenian Cathedral welcomes visitors with its cozy atmosphere. Nestled in the narrow, quaint streets of this area, you’ll feel transported to the heart of the 13th century, far from the hustle and bustle of the modern city.
During the Soviet era, this area was a beloved filming location for many directors. Today, there’s nothing better than wandering into the small and inviting courtyards near the shrine and admiring architecture dating back to the Medieval Ages. Some of the frescoes here are almost 600 years old!

After a busy day, reward yourself with dinner in a legendary place! Kryivka has stood the test of time in Lviv’s competitive food scene since opening many years ago.
Designed to resemble a secret underground bunker of Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) fighters from World War II, Kryivka translates to “hideout” or “concealment” in Ukrainian. To gain entry, knock on the door and respond with the password: “Heroyam slava!” to “Slava Ukraini!” (Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the Heroes!), a national motto as integral to our identity as vyshyvankas. Once inside, immerse yourself in the ambiance and enjoy great local food.

For the second day of your weekend in Lviv, let’s step away from the hustle and bustle of the Old Town and delve deeper into the city’s history. The list of things to do might be shorter, but only because these locations are scattered around the city and each one requires at least an hour to explore properly.
Historic Walk: Discover Lychakiv Cemetery
Founded in 1786, ancient Lychakiv Cemetery is filled with history and is an adventure in itself. There are over 400,000 tombs and crypts where some of the most prominent Ukrainians have found their resting place. Today, the necropolis is a museum with serene, quiet alleys leading through numerous impressive sculptures, and it is an interesting item on a Lviv travel itinerary. We recommend at least an hour at this location as it is quite big. To get to the historic burial site, take a taxi or tram #7, hopping off at Lychakiv Cemetery.

Just a stone’s throw from Lviv’s Old Town, the Potocki Palace stands as a majestic testament to the city’s rich heritage. Built in the 1880s at the behest of Count Alfred II Potocki, scion of one of Galicia’s most illustrious noble families, this architectural gem offers visitors a glimpse into Lviv’s aristocratic past.

Despite enduring damage during the wars of the 1670s and subsequent pillaging by locals who repurposed its stones, the climb offers a rewarding experience with breathtaking views of the cityscape.
While the ascent is relatively straightforward, it’s advisable to wear comfortable shoes and embark either early morning or evening to avoid the heat. Embrace the opportunity to witness Lviv’s history from a unique vantage point, where remnants of the castle walls echo tales of its storied past against the backdrop of a panoramic city view.
Descend into the Coffee Mines
At Lviv Kopalnya Kavy, also known as the Lviv Coffee Mine, you can experience a unique blend of cafe, store, and museum. Simply approach any of the Kopalnya’s employees and ask for a free tour of the mines. You’ll be led to the basements of the store for a fun presentation on how coffee is ‘mined’. The performance is so convincingly staged that I always give props to the creative team of the store. This is such a Lviv thing to do to immerse visitors into a whimsical coffee mining experience.
Meet Locals Over a Glass of Cherry Liquor
Back in the heart of Lviv, at Ploshcha Rynok, you’ll find one of its most vibrant evening spots: the Drunken Cherry. Nestled near the city hall, this small bar is easily recognizable by its long line—a sight we never miss. While queuing up for a glass of their signature cherry liquor (the sole drink on the menu), it’s a delight to mingle with locals and fellow travelers alike. With limited seating, patrons often opt to relax on nearby store porches or even on the pavements, enjoying their drinks and lively conversations.
The Drunken Cherry has become so beloved that its owners have expanded with franchises in Kyiv and Odesa, yet the original remains a must-visit for its unique atmosphere and warm community spirit in the heart of Lviv’s bustling square.

Among some of the most popular out-of-town activities and day trips, there is the Golden Horseshoe Castle Tour. This is a trip around three beautiful Medieval and Renaissance castles near the city. The first one, the Olesko Castle, is visible from the road. The other two, Pidhirtsi Castle and Zolociv Castle, are hidden in rural areas and the best way to get to them is by either renting a car or hopping on a private tour of the Golden Horseshoe.
Alternatively, venture into the Carpathians and explore Tustan — a magnificent remnant of the medieval fortress with the breathtaking panoramas of the region, or take a tour to explore the 17th century Monastery of St. Nicholas in Krekhiv and the well-preserved Zhovkva Castle. I’ve only told you about a small part of what Lviv has to offer in terms of a travel itinerary. You can come here for a weekend, a week, or two weeks – there’s plenty to see. And most importantly, you’ll probably want to come back here. But the main thing is not just to see, but to feel the atmosphere of the city of Lviv. It truly is one of a kind.
